On the Environment

In Missoula, in Montana, and in the world as a whole the status of the environment is an issue that each of us need to work on. From Earth First to UM's Environmental Studies Program to Montana's Timber and Mining Industries, there is a wide spectrum of perspectives concerning our environment. Our aim is to examine them all as necessary, to issue statements on particular issues, and to support those ideas that make sense to us.

At this point we are working to compile these perspectives for you to examine. If you would like to act as a spokesperson for a particular perspective, email us and we will include it here.

What is an Environmentalist?

What is a Conservationist?

What is more important, jobs or the environment? Does this question need to be asked!? Can we preserve jobs and the economy while preserving our environment?

Philosophies on the Environmental

Don't Manage it - The best way humans can work with the environment is through minimal interaction. Nature has built-in checks and balances, which include disease, forest fires, population wax and wane, etc. For humans to step in and try to eliminate these checks and balances is a recipe for disaster.

Humans First - Through developing new management techniques and technology, people can and should interact heavily with the environment to extract valuable resources and ensure that these resources are steadily available to us. While certain human activities in the environment are destructive, this is acceptable when it is for the betterment of particular individuals, who then spread this advantage to society as a whole. Furthermore, with ever-advancing technology, we will be able to reverse much of the destruction in the environment.
